16 Miles…

I’m on my seventh week of marathon training and was super pumped up today to run my first 16 miler!!! Here’s an excerpt from my running journal…

“16 mile run at Crockett Park in the misting gray. Longest distance I’ve ever run!!! Had a dip in energy/confidence around miles 6 and 12. Was so pumped to pass 13.1 and be able to keep going. But felt really annoyed by mile 14. Started being thankful for my legs, heart, and lungs around mile 14.5 and started praying. So grateful to finish. And saw 3 cardinals, 2 bluebirds, 2 blue jays, and 1 deer. Yay!”

JA Biztown…

I was so excited to be able to volunteer for the 5th grade field trip to JA Biztown for two days this week!!! It was such an incredible experience.

Jonas interviewed at school and landed a position as a Web Designer for the newspaper. He was so funny and said, “Mom, I thought I was just going to be designing the web page for the newspaper, but I ended up having to design web pages for all of the businesses in Biztown. They should’ve paid me more!”

The businesses represented were City Hall, the Memorial Foundation, UPS, Creative Solutions, the Newspaper, Biztown Center, TriStar Health, Dollar General, Pet Adoption Center, Journeys, First Tennessee Bank, the TV Station, the Radio Station, and a Restaurant. Each of the businesses had an adult volunteer (or two) to help facilitate four to eight 5th graders in various positions (every job had a yellow list of instructions to be followed). Over the course of two days, each 5th grade employee received two paychecks that they deposited at the bank and two paychecks that were direct deposited. They were encouraged to buy health insurance, make a deposit into their savings accounts, and given debit cards for spending money on their breaks (all while updating their check registers). Items available for purchase included: dog tags, buttons, tissue paper flowers, or t-shirt bracelets (Creative Solutions), newspapers (Newspaper), back scratchers and stress balls (TriStar Health), slime (Journeys), songs and song dedications (Radio Station), and popcorn and drinks (Restaurant). Each business held two staff meetings a day, and each employee got to take two breaks a day. I was the volunteer in Creative Solutions. We had a CEO, a CFO, four designers, and two sales managers. It was fascinating watching all of the kids personalities rise to the forefront and either work for them or not in their various positions.

What a rich experience! I’m so grateful that Jonas (and I) got to be a part of it. Here’s a picture of my little Web Designer…

Game Galaxy…

Last month, Roman went to a birthday party for his best friend at this retro arcade in Smyrna called Game Galaxy and loved it. So, I took the boys there today on their first day of Thanksgiving Break to try it out, and…it.was.awesome. I mean…it was so nostalgic for me…and brought back all of those memories of going to the arcade with my Dad when I was a little girl. I was so excited to see Pac-Man, Castlevania, Dig Dug, Food Fight, Centipede, Tempest, and Frogger!!! The boys tried out pinball machines for the first time and even got to step into the future with a little virtual reality. So cool.

CMA Awards…

I enjoyed being able to go to the CMA Awards with my mom tonight …more than anything, I enjoyed just spending time with her. Here we are in our fancy dresses on the red carpet…

Halloween…

This Halloween was one of the most cold and blustery Halloweens ever. I only took a few pictures at the very beginning of the night and spent the rest of the time bundling us all up to brave the elements for trick or treating. Jonas was a stickman, Xander was Pikachu, and Roman was a ninja.

Camping…

Tom and I were so excited to be able to go on a one-night/two-day camping trip at Henry Horton State Park this week. We couldn’t have done it without Aunt Julie coming to take care of the boys for us…brave soul. We car camped (glamped) this time around, and I loved it. We hiked 7 miles, took a rest in the tent, went out to eat dinner at the best little country restaurant in Lewisburg (all you can eat buffet for $5), came back to camp and hung out by the fire for a while, and even watched a movie. After a good night’s sleep in our comfy tent (Tom brought air mattresses for us), we hiked 3 more miles and then headed home. There’s nothing quite like being in the outdoors for me…add Tom to the mix, and I’m in heaven.

Rollin’ Nolen…

I ran the Rollin’ Nolen 10 miler this morning. It was probably the hardest race I’ve run…15 hills…4 brutal ones that had me shuffling. But I was still able to run the whole time, which was my A goal. My B goal was to finish between 1:35 and 1:40, and I crossed at 1:41 (placed 4th in my age group for women). I felt good about that…it was crazy trying to pace those hills, though…shuffling up and sprinting down…I felt like I had no idea what I was doing…haha. Tom and the boys came out to cheer me on, which was awesome…the bright spot for me…I got to see them three times during the race AND at the finish line. Love, love, love, love.

Fall Break: Chattanooga…

We went to Chattanooga for Fall Break!!! We stayed in a hotel and walked around downtown, checked out the aquarium, ate a delicious dinner at Blue Plate, saw Superpower Dogs in 3D (so awesome…about all kinds of rescue dogs…we even got to meet a few in the theater lobby), grabbed some ice cream at Cold Stone Creamery, and walked along the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge. The weather was perfect, and we loved our one-night/two-day getaway just a few hours from home.

Roman’s Field Trip to Lucky Ladd…

I was so happy to be able to go with Roman on his field trip to Lucky Ladd today! He loved picking out a pumpkin, feeding the sheep, petting the goats, going down the slides, and digging in the sand. It was pretty warm for an October day, but it was still a great way to kick off the fall season.

Fun Run…

The boys ran their Fun Run today…they always have such a blast! There’s something about watching a race that gets my heart every time…I always find myself getting choked up…especially when it’s my three little guys running their hearts out. Roman was the only one I was able to get a good action shot of…he loves to pose for the camera which makes it easy. But I was still able to grab some good post-race shots of Jonas and Xander. Thanks to everyone who sponsored them and helped them raise money for NES!!!

Sweet Moos…

We have the coolest new hand-rolled ice cream shop in town called Sweet Moos, so I thought it would be a fitting place to take the boys for sweet treat rewards. They’ve all three been working hard…Jonas finished his ELA choice board and brought his grade up to a 100%, Roman earned three smiley faces in a week for good behavior in class, and Xander has been consistently doing a great job academically and behaviorally.

Here were the flavors of the moment:
Mom – nutella and banana
Jonas – cheesecake and strawberries
Xander and Roman – oreo and toasted marshmallow
We can’t wait to go back and treat ourselves again…so yummy!!!
