Patting the Bulbs…

The boys and I have been babying two containers of bulbs (tulips and daffodils) that we forced indoors earlier this winter, and they’re finally coming up!!! It has been a long, cold winter, and we are all SO more than ready for the spring to be here at last. Here’s Roman coaxing them up with a little pat.

You know, I listened to a sermon recently about seasons…specifically the challenging season of winter…how it can be a time of preparation and pruning in our lives. A few things stood out to me…one just the picture of things being under the soil, hidden and dark and invisible, but still there and alive (just dormant) even though you don’t see them..two the idea of trusting the sower more than the seed…and three the thought of remaining…even in the hidden, dark, and invisible times…through the process of pruning to the new and better life that comes afterwards. Dear Lord, help me to trust You, the Sower, and to remain. And thank You for the different seasons of earth and life that You give…without which I could never fully appreciate the beauty of each.

Twenty-Four Months…

At twenty-four months, Roman is: saying things like “Yummy in my tummy”, “No eat my carrot, Petra”, “Don’t worry, Mommy”, “Love you, Mommy”, “Miss you, Mommy”, and more; cutting a few more teeth; and going from telling me he needed a diaper change to telling me he needed to go potty in just a few short weeks (I was fully intentioning to wait until this summer to potty train him but decided to shelve that and just go with his current awareness/desire and jump right in with him…we’re all losing sleep and are more than a little energy drained, but he’s doing really well with it and hasn’t looked back since he wore his last diaper last week…go Ro!).

Changing Wheels…

Tom surprised Xander yesterday with a bicycle (thank you, Freecycle!). This morning, he put the training wheels from Jonas’ bicycle on it, and Xander had a big time trying it out. Roman has been flirting with Xander’s tricycle for a while now (which will pass to him, even though he’s not quite big enough to ride it yet…although I’m sure Xander will still ride it some), and he loved just sitting on it with his feet on the pedals, ringing the bell. And Jonas enjoyed the adventure of trying to ride his bicycle without the training wheels. (You know…watching that process was as thrilling, if not more so, for me as watching him learn how to walk. He’s not there yet, but I’m so excited for the freedom that will come for that wild little boy when he gets there.)

Marshmellow…

We brought home Xander’s class pet this morning for the weekend…Marshmellow the guinea pig. The boys just love her…they scoot their chairs over to peek into her cage to check and see how she’s doing, they wave at her and say hello from across the room, they’re absolutely delighted to hold her, and they enjoy helping me with her daily care. Yay for class pets, and yay for super sweet boys to love them!

Twenty-Three Months…

In his twenty-third month, Roman is: coming up with all sorts of things to say like “Ro Ro turn”, “Petra eat it”, “Sku me burp”, “heard airplane too…listen…coming”, “Petra good girl”, “logurt” for yogurt, “did it”, “find it”, “reach it…need chair”, “mommy I need you”, “wait mommy…red light”, “Doing?”, “Going?”, “naked boy”, “Jonas”, “Xander”, “Why?”, “mean”, “AhAh best friend”, “fist bump Petra”, and more; still winning the messiest and whiny-est boy at mealtimes award; sleeping a little longer in the morning FINALLY (thanks to daddy for his ninja process of elimination in figuring that one out); and continuing to bless our hearts with his happy, into everything, passionate, talkative, snuggly self.

Discovery Center…

The boys and I spent the morning at the Discovery Center checking out the Curious George exhibit. I was so grateful for the free admission in honor of MLK Day…but, in retrospect, my anxiety level was so high from trying to swim through crowds of kids and parents with all of their activity and noise…not to mention attempting to keep an eye on all three of my little boys who were exploring in three different directions in the midst of it…that I think the $25 would have been well worth it to go on a different day with way fewer people. I still hung in there with it, and they had a blast checking everything out. And then, when we were all feeling over it, we enjoyed spending the rest of our time outside…eating a picnic lunch, playing on the playground, and walking down the boardwalk over the natural wetlands.

Feeding the Ducks…

After we dropped off Jonas at preschool this morning, Xander and Roman and I went on a duck feeding adventure. There’s a great little duck pond in the next town over that we like to visit when we have a stash of stale bread heels to share. The ducks were a little aggressive when we were passing out the bread, so Roman kept saying “Hold, hold!”. I held him most of the time, while Xander sweetly herded the ducks toward the water (by the end of our time there, he had most of them swimming in the pond).

Snow…

We woke up this morning to a little bit of snow, so the boys and I bundled up and headed out to play. They had fun trying to spoon snow into baking tins for painting later. Jonas enjoyed the snow scooping challenge the most, Xander loved eating snow by the spoonfuls and could’ve stayed out there forever, and Roman was not long for his mittens and as a result not long for the cold. But we had fun and enjoyed a warm cup of hot chocolate afterwards.

Twenty-Two Months…

At twenty-two months, Roman is: saying things like “not working…need battery”, “wash hands”, “plate sink”, “too dark”, and more; singing songs like crazy…ABCs, Five Silly Monkeys, and Brahm’s Lullaby; dancing to music; taking his plate to the sink after meals; recognizing some of his letters; identifying his shapes; matching up book titles from sound to sight (I’ll ask him what he wants to read and he’ll say “Boo Boo” or “Ten Tiny Tickles” and go and find them on the book shelf); and telling jokes (Roman: “Knock knock.” Mommy: “Who’s there?” Roman: “Bamouse.” Mommy: “Bamouse who?” Roman: “Banana.”).

ArtQuest…

The boys and I met Aunt Heather and Cousins Val and Annabella this morning at the Frist Center. Admission was free with canned goods donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Thanks so much to Aunt Heather for letting us know about it. I was so excited to get to check out the Norman Rockwell exhibit! Soaking in the beauty, even for a moment until my little ones quickly figured out how the sounds of their voices and footsteps carried within the great acoustics of those halls, was such a treat. The boys loved exploring the ArtQuest with their cousins. (I think the last time we were there was with the Morozovs as well when Xander was Roman’s age or younger…amazing how time passes.) ArtQuest is a fabulous interactive art exhibit for kids…Jonas’ favorite thing was kaleidoscope drawing and Xander and Roman loved building with magnets and painting.

Christmas Day…

We spent Christmas Day in Hendersonville with Pops and Maw, Eddie Stubbs, Uncle Darren, Cousins Kaia and Marina, Uncle Kerry, Aunt Julie, Cousins Jordan and Dylan, and Aunt Jeanne. It was so sweet just to be around everybody…eating yummy food, playing with the kids, opening presents, and catching up by the fire. Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve…

We spent Christmas Eve in Gallatin with MeMe and PaPa, Aunt Jean, Aunt Julie, Cousins Jordan and Dylan, and Aunt Jeanne. We ate a delicious lunch (MeMe would totally win Master Chef), had fun watching the kids open their presents (I will never forget MeMe and PaPa coming down the hallway with a big wheel and a cool hat for each boy), and enjoyed a White Elephant gift exchange with the adults (the stealing part of the exchange is always so interesting and funny). Eat, drink, and be merry!

Uncle Kerry Home From Taiwan…

Uncle Kerry is home to stay after almost 17 (count them) years in Taiwan!!! I mean…huge. We are so excited that he’s here. The boys and I ran by his house this morning (they were still in their pajamas…ha) to deliver a homemade caramel chocolate almond covered apple Christmas treat (thanks to Aunt Tree for the recipe). He showed us the most beautiful and inspiring slide show of his hike to the base camp of Mt. Everest. (It’s good for me to be reminded of how big and wonderful our world is…I can’t wait to see more of it.) Here he is with a captive audience.

Playground…

It has been so cold and rainy and gray lately that it’s starting to get to me (and I think the boys too). So, we have been really thankful for the warm sunshine this week…we’ve gone to the playground two afternoons in a row! (It gets cold quickly when the sun goes down, but it’s still worth it for the boys to burn off all of that wild boy energy.)

Christmas Alphabet Tree…

After the big boys came in from their trail blazing explore in the woods with Daddy and Roman finished playing with Playdoh (i.e. throwing all the Playdoh and tools on the ground), they set to work on this fun Christmas Alphabet Tree craft I saw on Pinterest. I’m trying to ramp up my winter activity stash, as it’s been cold and rainy and Christmas Break is coming up (help me, Lord).

Bird Feeders…

The boys made bird feeders this morning with their sweet neighborhood buddies, Claire and Eleanor. We tried out a different recipe than the one we used last year that worked much better (it was simpler and held together even if it was a little bit messier). It was as easy as 1, 2, 3…spread soy butter (our substitute for peanut butter) on the outside of an empty toilet paper roll, roll it in bird seed, and hang it on a bare branch to give the birds a midwinter’s treat. Here’s a picture of Roman working it out and a few pictures of the finished product.
